Research Publications

Welcome to the publications section. Here, you can explore a collection of research papers, articles, and resources related to our ongoing work trying to better understand and mitigate the impacts human activities (in particular marine vessels) have on cetaceans. Dive into the latest findings from our studies that contribute to the conservation and protection of these incredible marine mammals.

Automated identification system for ships as a proxy for marine vessel related stressors

  • Automatic Identification System (AIS) increasingly used to represent vessel traffic for marine conservation and management .

  • This study introduces two novel vessel traffic data collection systems complementary to AIS

  • The analysis quantifies uncertainty using AIS to represent marine vessel associated threats

  • This uncertainty is quantified in both space and time

Vessel traffic in the Canadian Arctic: management solutions for minimising impacts on whales in a changing Northern region

The objective of this study was to pre-empt a predicted increase in vessels by investigating and exploring possible management scenarios, with the aim of mitigating negative impacts on locally important species such as bowhead and beluga whales. Utilising insights gained from established vessel management
schemes in more southerly regions, this paper evaluates the current suite of tools being implemented and their appropriateness for implementation in a more extreme Arctic environment.
